3. Local Happenings

  • Explore the Cultural Cascades! Amtrak Cascades links the cities of Vancouver, British Columbia; Seattle; Tacoma; Portland; and Eugene, forming the Cultural Cascades region that provides a gateway to endless exploration. Visit the website for the most up-to-date events.
  • Bring your bicycle to Eugene, one of the most bike friendly cities in the country. It offers over 53 miles of streets with bike lanes, 19 designated streets just for bicycles, and 25 off-street trails. Six bike bridges cross the Willamette River.
  • Visit the Eugene Saturday Market, the oldest weekly open-air crafts festival in the United States. The first Saturday Market was held on May 9, 1970; it rained, and there were 29 vendors. Today, the market has over 800 active members and 300 members sell each week.
  • Explore the outdoors within an hour of Eugene. Wilderness areas with pristine lakes, breathtaking waterfalls, picturesque streams, glaciers, sprawling lava fields, hot springs, and rolling sand dunes surround the city. If you want more adventure, Skinner Butte, just a few blocks north of the train station, is an ideal location for rock climbing.
  • Wander around the University of Oregon's 280-acre campus. Check out one of the four museums on campus, or cheer for the Pac-10 Fighting Ducks.
